Network Engineer - Pleasanton, CA
JOB DUTIES
- Install, manage and daily operational support activities on Cisco, Extreme, Foundry and Tasman routers and switches
- Install, manage and daily operational support activities on Check Point NG, Cisco PIX and Juniper (Netscreen) firewalls.
- Racking Cisco, Extreme, Foundry, Juniper and Check Point devices.
- Creating custom-lengths of CAT6 cables for network devices.
- Work with customers to select proper connectivity solutions for customer to access to company data centers either over private lines or VPNs.
- Perform software upgrades on Cisco, Foundry, Extreme, Check Point, and Netscreen devices.
- Implement and monitor network performance and up time of corporate and production networks.
- Implement and monitor network security logs and ids infrastructure.
- Document and maintain network designs and configurations.
- Document and maintain network infrastructure procedures and other documentation.
- Ensure routers, switches and firewalls are maintained to company's network and security policies and practices.
- Provide network trouble-shooting services to internal and external departments, groups and customers with varying skill levels using various packet sniffer tools and network logs..
- Interact with customers on gaining access to data centers.
- Provide 24x7 on call support when needed.
- Traveling up to a week to company data centers.
- Work closely with internal and external departments and groups to analyze requirements and develop solutions for both internal company projects and external customer projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledgeable with Cisco, Extreme, Foundry and Tasman routers and switches.
- Knowledgeable with Check Point NG, Cisco PIX, FW IOS, and Juniper-Netscreen firewalls.
- Knowledgeable with BGP, EIGRP and OSPF routing protocols.
- Knowledgeable with UNIX and Microsoft NT environments.
- Knowledgeable of network communications of SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, FTPS, SOAP, PING,
- TRACEROUTE, and Microsoft ActiveDirectory
- Knowledgeable of Cisco VoIP CallManager and Customer Contact Center.
- Knowledgeable of TCP/IP packet headers.
- Ability to fully read network captures with TCPDUMP, SNOOP, Ethereal, Observer.
- Ability to trouble-shoot TCP/IP communications at a packet level.
- Ability to trouble-shoot TCP/IP communications through statefull firewalls.
- Ability to trouble-shoot VPN communications.
- Ability to work cross functionally in a positive and supportive manner with internal and external teams and customers.
- Ability to practice good judgment in dealing with unforeseen issues that may arise.
- Proven skills to assess complex problems and situations and make sound decisions.
- Ability to initiate, manage and complete new projects with minimal direction and guidance, and conduct them through a project life cycle which includes requirements analysis, design, planning, evaluation, implementation, and formal presentations.
- Ability to present technical information and convey knowledge to peers and customers.
EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years experience in network communications with a strong emphasis on trouble-shooting connectivity.
- Must be experienced with Cisco routers, switches and firewalls.
- Must be experienced with CheckPoint firewalls.
- Must have CCNA or better.
- Extensive knowledge of security practices/technologies, VPN, proxies, system hardening, and security policies.
- Must possess a complete understanding of complex network designs using high-speed technologies including MPLS, ATM and Gigabit Ethernet.
- Experience in Enterprise Networking LAN/WAN field, including experience in corporate implementation and maintenance of Network Routing, Gateways, and basic NT and UNIX administration in a TCP/IP environment. Knowledge of the following protocols: Ethernet, TCP/IP, SMTP, FTP, SNMP, HTTP and HTTTPS
- Experienced in making good decisions when unforeseen issues arise.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
Valid certifications in either Cisco or Check Point.
